A new map of the Antarctic

As part of the International Polar Year actions, IGN has produced a new map of the Antarctic replacing the one dating back to 1969, which no longer corresponded to the continent's current dimensions. This work, performed with the help of a number of partners*, was based on a multitude of satellite data and information from the field.

Thousands of high school students made aware of sustainable growth

IGN has distributed this map in High Schools, under the patronage of Jean-Louis Borloo, Minister of Ecology, Development and Sustainable Growth and Territorial Development, and Xavier Darcos, Minister of National Education.

Carte IGN de l'Antarctique

This map made available to teachers can serve numerous purposes, and firstly to teach students in high school fifth form about the Antarctic, as part of their syllabus. More generally, this document can be used as an aid for studies on the polar environment or to illustrate the geopolitical stakes in these areas, whether taken alone or in multi-disciplinary projects. Lastly it represents a reliable resource that can reinforce the widespread educating of pupils in sustainable development.

A teaching folder accompanying the map and intended for history-geography and life and earth sciences teachers will soon be put online at
ign.fr and education.gouv.fr.
